COVID-19 Diary – Day 177

Periodically I go through old COVID-19 blog posts and take a look at things that sounded very promising months ago, and do some checking to see if they ever came to be. An example of this is the antibody treatment that Sorrento Therapeutics has been working on.

We don’t know too much about Sorrento’s STI-1499 product, officially named COVI-GUARD(tm), which claims to neutralize 100% of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, which they have tested with hamsters. And COVI-GUARD(tm) is just one of several projects Sorrento is currently working on currently. Take a look at their current list:

There is still a lot left to learn about these products, and it would certainly be premature to expect them to solve the pandemic just yet, but it’s worth keeping an eye on Sorrento and their efforts over the next few months. Especially if they receive the desired approval to begin selling COVI-GUARD(tm) by the end of this year in the USA. More info can be found here and here.

In other news, we’ve all been feeling the crunch of COVID-Fatigue after dealing with the pandemic for about 6 months now. I’d like to take a moment to remind everyone to check on their friends and loved ones to see how they’re coping. The Crisis Centre of BC ran two surveys recently, one shortly before the pandemic, and one later in August. The August survey showed that 28% more Metro-Vancouver residents listed their mental health at fair-to-poor than in the previous survey. You can read more about the results here.

If you or someone you know is struggling, especially with thoughts of suicide, you can reach the Crisis Centre of BC at:

  • Anywhere in BC 1-800-SUICIDE: 1-800-784-2433
  • Mental Health Support Line: 310-6789
  • Online Chat Service for Youth: (Noon to 1am)
  • Online Chat Service for Adults: (Noon to 1am)

In other news, there areseveral trials currently being done on various potential COVID-19 treatments, right here in BC! If you or someone you know qualifies and would like to be part of one of the studies, you can read more about them here.

Last Saturday on August 29th, local police shut down a large party located in West Vancouver where between 200 and 300 guests were present, mostly between the ages of 17 and 19. One organizer was fined $230, and “all of the youth were advised essentially of the stupidity of their actions” according to the reporting officer involved. More info can be found here.

That’s all for now, stay safe everyone!
